Deadly Shooting in the Poconos

COOLBAUGH TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Pocono Mountain Regional Police say one man was shot and killed and another was wounded late Sunday night in Coolbaugh Township.

The body of Daniel Santana, 20, of Tobyhanna, was found inside a crashed car at Winter Court and Pembroke Terrace inside A Pocono Country Place development.

Police later found Angel Rodriguez-Martinez, 21, in a wooded area.  Investigators say he was in the car with Santana at the time of the shooting. Rodriguez-Martinez was not hurt.

Santana’s death is called a homicide.

While there haven’t been any arrests yet in the case, the head of public safety at A Pocono Country Place says the shooting was an isolated incident in which everyone involved knew each other. He emphasized this wasn’t a random crime and the public is not in danger.

The crack of gunfire jolted Patricia Dobson awake.

“It was horrendous. It was like, I want to say the shots were going back and forth within seconds of each other,” Dobson recalled.

She later learned a man behind the wheel of a car died in that gunfire in the Winter Court area of A Pocono Country Place.

A Pocono Country Place Chief of Public Safety Kurt Cummings believes the violence started with an argument that got out of control.

“We’re just sad that someone had to lose their life over words,” Cummings said.

Court records show the victim, Daniel Santana, has a history of conflict.

In January, police accused him of pointing a rifle from the window of a home in A Pocono Country Place and threatening to shoot people outside. He was out on bail on those charges when he got shot.

He had pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in 2016 and 2017.

After the shooting, many people went online with complaints that the community where this happened has a bad reputation.

Chief Cummings told us that during peak times, A Pocono Country Place has more than 20,000 residents so the percentage of serious crime compared with the large population is relatively small.

“We have worked hard to make sure that A Pocono Country Place is safe and I think we have done a great job in the past five, six years,” Cumming said.

Pocono Mountain Regional Police haven’t released any information about the person or people who shot Santana. They ask that anyone who has information about what happened to contact them immediately.
